Not ready to jump into a large-scale project but still want to make something awesome for your garden wall (or home, school, street?)

In this action-packed 4-day workshop, students will learn how to make small-scale mosaic murals that can be created in a few days and look great installed on a wall. Students will also learn how to make individual, small mosaic elements that can be installed by themselves or as part of a larger arrangement.

I call this technique “appliqué”, indicating affixing a specific mosaic element onto a larger surface, usually with a painted background.

Whether a mosaic flower for your garden wall, a mosaic butterfly to be done with a group of school kids, a set of stair risers, or something to be installed in the public sphere, workshop participants will learn how to make mural-like elements using some of the principals I teach in my Mosaic Mural Making workshops, but on a smaller scale, applied to personalized projects.

Students will design and create a mural element using the Tile Tape Method, an off-site creation method that which allows elements to be installed at a later time. Students will come away with the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to install a small mosaic element they make during the workshop later, on their own, in an environment of their choice.

I’ll share some of my best tips and tricks for successful, lasting exterior installations.

Workshop will include demonstration, the hands-on creation of a small mural and the creation of a personal mosaic element to take home. Students will have the choice of working with exterior-grade ceramic tile, glass or a combination.

I’ll be demonstrating how exactly how I install and grout these types of projects using a small mural that we will actually install on an exterior wall.

Workshop will also cover

  • Cutting and setting techniques for exterior-grade ceramic tile and glass

  • Working with ceramic tile and glass in various climates

  • Working with mirror (thick and thin)

  • Use of mosaic tools for precision cuts, including my Left Hand Theory

  • Use of the Tile Tape Method (vs.using fiberglass mesh)

  • Dividing and coding easy one-person installation

  • All about thin-set

  • Substrate preparation for permanent, exterior installations

  • Application of an even mortar bed for painless installation

  • Grouting with a finished, professional edge for a graceful transition onto background

  • Sourcing materials for future projects

In this fun, information-rich workshop students will work in the company of other creative makers, while benefitting from my 30 years of experience making mosaic murals and architectural elements around the world.

Students are welcome to bring special colors and materials to incorporate in their small-scale mural elements, provided they are the same thickness.

Design templates ranging from approximately 12” x 12” to 16 “ x 16” will be provided that students can use or adapt, or, they can bring their own design.

Note: instructor will work with students to simplify, or create more complexity, in their designs as appropriate for duration of workshop.

Patterns include: Flower, bird, dragonfly, butterfly, radial/ mandala, heart, lizard, lotus
