We shipped out a beautiful glass mural entitled "Seascape" for successful installation in a Marriott Hotel in Bal Harbor, Florida. Hope to see it installed in person someday! A series of 30 giant mosaic planters that we completed in January for the Oakland Unity Council are being installed along International Blvd. between Fruitvale and High Streets in East Oakland. Take a stroll along International and check them out! We just installed a great mural sign with African and Latino inspired designs on the front of Casa Segura, a non- profit involved in HIV awareness and prevention on Foothill Blvd.@ Fairmont in East Oakland. Another great project completed at VELOCITY
CIRCUS MUSEUM in San Francisco (www.Gregangelo.com)! We covered 400 sq
ft. a secret maze hallway- walls and ceiling- with circular mirror tesserae
ranging from 12" diameter to 1/2" diameter with black grout.
The hallway leads to a hidden pyramid shaped room painted like the universe
with LED lighting and moving string sculpture! Also at VCM, we did a "Zen" bathroom installation with jade and celadon green ceramic tile on the floor and ceiling and sink splash with a river pebble path running thru the floor. Thank you to Lisa Berman, Connie English, the ever-awesome Yukari Kato, Shanon Murray, Krista Paar and David Ray for their assistance on various projects this year! CURRENT PROJECTS This month we are working on a marble mosaic kitchen backsplash for a private residence in Pleasanton, CA. The design is Craftsman inspired and we are using a traditional Italian setting style looking great . Also working on a large mirror commission for a private bathroom that references the sea and the beach. We are using beach pebbles, sea glass, stained glass, ceramic tile and travertine. We are also continuing work on the mural "Free Wood" on Chapman St @ Derby, across from the Studio Purple trees w/ secret doors, pique assiette suns and mirrored branches and fused glass eyes of course ;-) I am continuing a series of small house sculptures and working on the third one, called The Fifth House. It is about as tall as I am and is about all the Joys of life! Also working on a vitreous, stained and fused glass mosaic wall piece entitled "The Emergency". I am putting my new fusing skills to use and have created over 50 individual fused glass shapes to be included in this mosaic. Thank God for the fusing lab at the Crucible, where I get to be a student! (www.thecrucible.org) UPCOMMING PROJECTS I am doing a giant mosaic covered heart for the HEARTS IN SF project to benefit SF General Hospital. 130 artists are covering heart sculptures that will be placed around the city of San Francisco this summer. Look for mine you wont be able to miss the fused glass eyes, mirrored swirls and pink and purple tile! Hearts will be auctioned off at the end of the summer to benefit SF General. More mosaics at VELOCITY CIRCUS MUSEUM this time a Japanese inspired bathroom floor and sink splash done in jet black river stones. Gregangelo is keeping it "toned down" for this one ;-) Moving forwards with a series of sun inspired sculptures for Ocean Ave. In SF thru SF Arts Commission Designs coming along great Community Mosaic Mural Project and Sculptural Mosaic Bench at Aba House Cultural Center in Nungua Ghana after the workshop/ tour I will be facilitating and additional project with community members in partnership with Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. If you would like to contribute to these
communities based mosaic projects in Ghana with a tax- deductible donation
thru CCC, Inc. please contact me! I will be in Ghana from July 11- most of August! PRESS AND PUBLICATIONS My work and the work of many other mosaic artists is featured in a wonderful new book by Lillian Sizemore called A GUIDE TO MOSAIC SITES - SAN FRANCISCO. Lillian has done a super bang up job of presenting the most exciting mosaic sites both on and off the beaten path in SF. A fabulous guide for the mosaic lover to explore the sites! Find out more about her book and mosaic walking tours in SF at www.SFmosaic.com The April 2004 issue of CRAFTS REPORT MAGAZINE has a follow up article to their 2003 article about Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. projects in Ghana. The article mentions how my and other American artist's experiences teaching in Ghana have impacted our lives and how we are using these experiences to inform our present life/ work. Speaking of community projects, I was honored to be a guest lecturer at CCA- California College of the Arts- in March for a class about how art impacts the community taught by Patricia Alarcon. I showed slides from the community mosaic projects I have facilitated in Ghana and other community projects Great fun HGTV SEGMENT ! (my 5 minutes of fame) Watch me on a new show that airs this fall called Crafters Coast to Coast on HGTV. I will be featured in a 6 min segment doing glass and mixed media mosaics! I am hoping I look cool ;-)
What is going on down at Ocean Beach in SF? Someone/s has done some amazing embellishments on the wall facing the beach near door #16. I am very impressed and recommend a trip to see some renegade mosaic graffiti! I am hoping to see more of this crop up in other parts of San Francisco ;-)
Coming soon! We are working on a series of three how - to DVDs and hoping to have them ready for the SAMA (Society of American Mosaic Artists - americanmosaics.org) conference in March in D.C.
