This unique workshop will combine lecture, theory, demonstration and hands on collaborative mosaic mural making. Community Mosaics: How to work with groups and facilitate group projects, designing to reflect community interests/ needs

Working with Tools and Materials: Mosaic tool use and substitutions, locating and using local mosaic and setting materials

Mosaic Mural Making Processes: Gridding and transfer of design, delegating different parts, working as a group

Mosaic Setting Techniques: Direct vs. other options, appropriateness to site, fixatives.

Grouting: Using cement as grout, finishing

Workshop participants will receive an orientation at Aba House Cultural Center, tour Nungua and meet local community members before workshop begins. Tour of Accra, visits to museums, art galleries, studios and Craft Tour of Ghana will follow the workshop. Nungua is a fishing village located on the ocean, about a half hour from Accra. The weather is beautiful in July with temperatures in the 80s during the day and in the 70s at night. There is a cool ocean breeze at night in Nungua and the atmosphere is relaxed…no rushing! Nungua is known in the region as an arts community and has modern facilities; shops, restaurants, bars, as well as many artist workshops and studios representing many different disciplines including, weaving, textile dying, sign painting, sculpture, ceramics and more.

Aba House is a cultural center and guest house located directly across from the ocean. It was built in the traditional style from earth, plaster and thatching. Aba House and Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. host many arts workshops and forums and there is always a buzz of activity. Other workshops at Aba House include ceramics, textile arts, papermaking, printmaking and more.

Workshop days will start at approximately 9am and run until around 5 with a break for lunch. Evenings will be spent enjoying social and/or cultural activities or as free time.

The Craft Tour will begin with an art and mosaic tour of Accra including the National Museum of Ghana and Center for Arts and Culture

and continue to Cape Coast for an historical tour of Posudam Shrine- Cape Coast Castle and fishing village, then onto Kankum National Wildlife Park and only canopy walk in West Africa, stopping in Kumasi to visit the King's Palace. Craft villages we will visit include: Krobo/ Odumasi: Bead making workshop and bead market, Bonwire (kente weaving village), Ntonso (adinkra village), Ahiwa (woodcarving village). The tour will finish with a cruise on Lake Volta, largest lake in Ghana.
